When young people have a safe place to turn, they’re more likely to stay connected to school, pursue employment, build healthy relationships, and overcome life’s challenges. But for many youth in East Hawaiʻi, finding that support isn’t always easy.
Neighborhood Place of Puna believes every young person deserves to feel safe, valued, and empowered to build the future they want. Through free youth services, housing navigation, outreach, and supportive programs, we help transitional-age youth across Hawaiʻi Island access the resources they need to thrive.
The Growing Need for Youth Services in East Hawaiʻi
The transition from adolescence to adulthood is an exciting time, but it can also be one of the most challenging.
Young people ages 14–25 are often balancing school, work, housing, relationships, and financial responsibilities while trying to build independence. For some, those challenges are compounded by housing instability, family conflict, mental health concerns, or a lack of supportive adults.
These young people, often referred to as transitional-age youth (TAY), can face unique barriers that make accessing help more difficult.
During the first six months of 2026 alone, Neighborhood Place of Puna served:
- 100 individual youth ages 14–25
- 75 youth households
- 39 youth who were already heads of their own households
- 93 services provided, including case management, drop-in support, and street outreach
All of these youth live right here in East Hawaiʻi. This highlights the resilience of young people who are working toward stability while navigating significant challenges.
Why Safe Spaces Matter
When young people don’t know where to go for help, even everyday challenges can feel overwhelming.
A safe space is a place where youth know they will be welcomed without judgment, treated with dignity, and connected to people who genuinely care.
For someone experiencing housing instability or uncertainty, having a trusted place to ask questions, use a computer, recharge a phone, connect with resources, or simply take a break can be life-changing.
Safe spaces help reduce isolation while creating opportunities for young people to build confidence, develop new skills, and strengthen their support network.
Isolation Can Be One of the Biggest Barriers
Many young people experience challenges that aren’t immediately visible. For example, some are couch surfing, others are working multiple jobs while finishing school. Some are caring for younger siblings or navigating adulthood without family support.
In fact, nearly half of the youth households served by Neighborhood Place of Puna this year were led by young people who were already heads of their own households.
When someone feels isolated, asking for help can become even more difficult.
That’s why creating welcoming environments where youth feel seen, heard, and respected is at the heart of everything we do.
A Trauma-Informed Approach to Youth Support
At Neighborhood Place of Puna, we recognize that many young people have experienced adversity or trauma.
Instead of asking, “What’s wrong with you?” our team asks, “What happened, and how can we support you?”
Our trauma-informed, strengths-based approach focuses on building trust, honoring each person’s experiences, and recognizing the resilience every young person already possesses.
Whether someone needs help finding housing, applying for benefits, connecting to employment opportunities, accessing education, or simply having someone to listen, our goal is to meet them where they are and help them move forward.
Introducing the Puna ʻŌpio Hub
To expand access to youth services in East Hawaiʻi, Neighborhood Place of Puna recently launched the Puna ʻŌpio Hub, a dedicated resource center designed specifically for youth ages 14–25.
The Hub offers a welcoming space where young people can:
- Access housing and community resources
- Receive case management and resource navigation
- Build job readiness and employment skills
- Explore college and career opportunities
- Participate in life skills workshops
- Connect with caring staff and peers
- Find a safe, supportive place to belong
The Puna ʻŌpio Hub reflects our belief that prevention begins with connection. By providing support early, we can help young people overcome barriers before they become larger crises.
Neighborhood Place of Puna: A Driver of Youth Services on Hawaiʻi Island
Supporting youth is woven throughout our mission.
Through the Puna ʻŌpio Hub, Family & Youth Outreach Program, Neighborhood Place Resource Centers, Mobile Family Resource Center, and Hale ʻIki Family Assessment Center, we work every day to ensure youth and families have access to free, strength-based services that promote stability and well-being.
Our team partners with schools, healthcare providers, community organizations, and local agencies because we know lasting change happens when communities work together.
Every Young Person Deserves Someone in Their Corner
Every young person has dreams, talents, and potential. By investing in youth today, we’re investing in healthier families, stronger communities, and a brighter future for all of us on Hawaiʻi Island.
If you or someone you know between the ages of 14 and 25 could benefit from free support, Neighborhood Place of Puna is here to help.
Because no young person should have to navigate life’s challenges alone. Every young person deserves a safe place to belong.
